Dam Century Ride: #103freakingmiles

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness …

No, it wasn’t Charles Dickens “Tale of Two Cities”, but it was Holly and Teresa’s “tale of 100 miles’ so sit back and enjoy the ride, pun intended, and I’ll tell you all about it!damcenturyride Continue reading

Fall Races: What’s on the LadyBird’s Schedule?

Ahhhh, the sights, sounds and scents of Fall …who doesn’t love this season? The sound of a crackling fire, the sweet sugary taste of candy corn, the beautiful colors of leaves floating to the ground, the sound of leaves crunching under foot and the crispness that fills the air ….these are just a few of my favorite things about Fall. I also love that with the arrival of Fall, it usually brings with it cooler temperatures and less humidity which in turn drives most runners to start signing up for every race they can possibly fit into their schedules. Am I right?

Today’s Tuesdays on the Run topic is all about Fall Races, so let’s see where I’ll be running over the next few months. Where will your running shoes take you this Fall?Fall

Those who follow me know that I’ve bitten the proverbial bullet and decided to attempt my first full marathon. With that in mind and now on the schedule, I have a few races in mind between now and then that, hopefully, will make for good training runs. Continue reading

Marathon Training Week 2: Settling In

How can it be Sunday already? My days have been consumed with two things …1. moving and 2. getting my workouts in.  Since we don’t have to be out of the rental house until the end of this month, we’ve been taking the move slowly, making a couple of trips a day, painting, replacing fixtures, etc. While it obviously is taking longer, this method has made it much more bearable. The movers are set to come on Wednesday for the big stuff and I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Speaking of the light at the end of the tunnel ….it just may be the light from the Johnny Ray train heading my way! After many months of chatter, CenturyRiHolly and I have finally found a century ride that works well for both of our busy schedules and are going to attempt to put our money where our mouths are! This coming Saturday, we will cruise the back roads of rural Alabama and circumnavigate the old Johnny Ray Trail line and even have the opportunity to cross a WWII era steel bridge. Whether we go the extra 44 miles to crush a century or stop at 63 to settle for a metric, one thing is for certain …there will be lots of fun, giggles and snacking amongst the pain and gnashing of teeth! Wish us luck! Continue reading

Marathon Training Week 1: See Sloth Run

Week one of marathon training complete. Yes, I know, I have a long way to go and the first week of marathon training really is no different from the first week of half marathon training, right? Well, maybe on paper ..but mentally, I’m finding that it’s already a different animal. My mindset is different, my goals are different and my fears are different. I mean, I know that I can run 13.1 miles because I’ve done it many times. But I don’t know that I can double that distance …heck, I don’t even know that I can run 15 miles, for that matter. However, during one of my training runs this week, I realized that I had all of these same thoughts and fears when I decided to train for my first half because I had never run that distance before either.  I thought about all of the excitement and anticipation I felt while training for that race and how satisfied I felt of such an accomplishment upon crossing that finish line and I’ll be honest ….it stirred my ‘running soul’ and brought it back to life! This time, I’m on the other side of 50 …older, stiffer and slower but I’m just as determined and excited to tackle a new goal, to push myself beyond anything I’ve ever done and hopefully cross a new finish line!

With that being said, instead of focusing on what I’m not sure I can do, I’m {trying hard} to focus on what I can do each week ….as Coach HoHo says, baby steps.  So let’s take a look at the ‘baby steps’ I took this week on my road to 26.2.26.2 Continue reading

Weekly Wrap: Labor Day Weekend ….literally.

Silly me, I thought Labor Day weekend was to rest …instead I’ve been laboring all weekend! It’s the price you pay for going on vacation the week before a long holiday weekend, I suppose. However, when you’re working on a move to a new house, it’s a good ‘laboring’, right? While most of you are poolside, on the lake or at the beach for that last ‘hoorah’, I’m taking a quick break from all of this ‘good laboring’ to join in on the Weekly Wrap link-up.

I’m not going to sugar-coat anything here, not much happened this past week in the way of workouts for several reasons …

  • I was still on Hawaii time 🤙
  • well, you know, THE move
  • a new training cycle begins this week and I really just wanted to take it easy before Coach HoHo hands my butt to me on a silver platter!

Yep, that’s right. In case you missed it, I revealed in yesterdays Ultimate Coffee Date that Major Hubs and I are working with Holly for my first full marathon and his second! As if it’s not scary enough just making the decision to give it a go, it’s even scarier to put it all out there for everyone to know about …you know, there’s always the chance of a DNF or DNS. However, I’ve decided that while there is that chance, the support and encouragement I know I’ll receive from you guys will be more than enough to see me through the training and that elusive finish line as well as more than enough sympathy and support while licking my wounds if, for whatever reason, it just doesn’t happen. I really don’t mean to sound so negative, it’s just the voice of an older, slower, injury prone and realistic runner who really wants to check this off of her bucket list, talking. Continue reading
