While the year began in a bit of a slump due to a nagging irritable ankle which followed me into the new year, I’d most definitely say the best was saved for last!
What I found to be most interesting looking back on the past year is that this is the first year since I began running (12 years ago) to not participate in a 5k. Crazy, huh? ….apparently I was so busy with two moves, four half marathons and hundreds of miles of cycling to even notice. However, despite the lack of 5k’s, the year was filled with meeting new friends, accomplishing new goals and spending countless Saturday mornings getting the miles in with my favorite running partner, Major Hubs ..what more can one ask for!
Mississippi Blues Half
This was my first half of the year and one I had signed up for the previous year before my ankle injury. I wasn’t even sure I’d be able to run and as luck would have it, a rare ice storm hit Mississippi the night before race day wreaking havoc and causing the race directors to ultimately cancel the race. They did allow participants to run it ‘virtually’ in order to receive their medals, which worked out well for me since I was injured. I did run my 13.1 miles, albeit slowly with quite a bit of walking, and picked up my 10th anniversary medal complete with 10 spinning guitars.
Utah Valley Half
Even though I hadn’t really fully recovered from my injury, I couldn’t let an opportunity to meet some fellow bloggers pass me by ….especially a downhill race and in Utah! Come on, you know you would’ve done the same thing!
- Soldier Half
I had been eyeing this half for a couple of years knowing that it would be one that Major Hubs would enjoy. When I learned that this year was the 100th anniversary of Ft. Benning, the military post hosting the race, I knew we had to register. Bonus points was when I asked Coach Hoho if it would fit into my marathon training plan, she responded with not only a yes, but also that she had run this race several times and could meet us there. Cha-ching!
Panama City Beach Half
An epic weekend on the beach was the setting for this hot and thirsty half marathon. Despite the less than ideal race conditions, the time spent with my Southern Sole Sisters was more than worth the 13 mile sweat-fest along the beautiful beaches of Panama City!
Run Through History
A seriously hilly, yet scenic, race held in my hometown of Vicksburg which takes place each year inside the Vicksburg National Military Park. Finisher medal are never handed out; however, if you are a seriously fast runner of hills, you can earn a cool civil war canon A/G award (which I’ve never even come close to getting)!
This was a local 10k which was held about a month out from the Utah Valley Half and I decided to use it as a training run. The hubs had Guard duty, so I tackled this one alone.
- Quarry Crusher Run
This was a race we decided to do as a fun run while in Birmingham for our anniversary. Little did we know just how difficult a 4 mile run down to the bottom of a rock quarry and back up would be! A real QUAD crusher, no doubt, but it was also a lot of fun …I mean, it’s not everyday you get the opportunity to play on a front-end loader!
A Bucket List:
- Century Ride
I had been contemplating tackling a century ride since the moment Lexi, my road bike, entered my life. When Holly and I met and realized that we both shared this common goal, I knew that together, we could make it happen. We took the plunge in late September and while I have no medal to show for this auspicious accomplishment, I have something much more meaningful ….the memories of 8 hours cycling the back roads of Alabama with a dear friend by my side!
Ah yes ….2017 ’twas a good year. Contrary to popular belief, however, it’s not just about the ‘bling’ …it’s more about the goals achieved and the friends made along the way. And with that in mind, I can hardly wait to see what 2018 has in store!
How was you year? Did you scratch off a bucket list item? Any big goals for 2018?
I’m linking up with Marcia, Erika and Patty for Tuesdays on the Run as well as Rachel, Lora and Debbie for The Coaches Corner. Be sure to pay them a visit and see all the ‘bling’ they earned over the past 12 months.
