Are You Afraid of Old Age?

Ever have those moments when someone says something to you that immediately puts you on the defensive? That’s really a rhetorical question ….of course you have. It’s happened to me more times than I care to admit and it happened again recently.

As I’ve gotten older and wiser, I’ve learned to let things ‘simmer’ for a while before I respond. My husband has taught me that it’s always better to act rather than to react. Yes, he’s a wise man. So it was, that I did exactly that, I let it simmer for a moment or two before responding. However, I have to admit that it continued to gnaw at me. Not because I’m still offended by the comment, but rather I’m saddened that there are so many people out there who simply do not understand the satisfaction of living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and seem to want to criticize and judge those who do.

Lessons Learned from a Downhill Marathon

A few weeks ago, I completed my second full marathon ….Revel Rockies, a downhill marathon just outside of Denver Colorado. They don’t call Denver the ‘mile high’ city for nothing. It sits at an elevation of 5,280 ft above sea level which is exactly 5,000 ft above where I live and train. To add to the challenge, the race started even higher, at 10,500 ft with a net drop of 4,708 ft. 3,000 of that being in the first half of the race.

Now that I’ve recovered and can finally take the stairs at work again without using profanity, I can look back on that 26.2 mile trek down that incredibly beautiful mountain with objectivity and ponder the lessons learned …because I believe there are lessons to be learned in every mile we run.

Revel Rockies Marathon

Only a few months after completing my first full marathon in January, and vowing to never run another, I found myself registered for the Revel Rockies Marathon. Whether it was the power of a persuasive friend or the lure of the marathon distance, I can’t be sure. But what I do know is this ….deep down inside of me, even while swearing I’d never run another, I felt I needed one more just to prove to myself that it wasn’t a fluke …that I could do it again. For some reason, the ‘one and done’ felt like I was wimping out. So, when Holly asked if I was interested in running this marathon with her …I knew I had to do it. I had to run ‘just one more marathon’.
